The largest member of the dolphin family, killer whales—or orcas—include distinct populations with vastly different eating habits. Transient orcas hunt marine mammals like seals and sea lions. Resident orcas subsist almost entirely on salmon--predominantly chinook salmon, the largest, fattiest species in the region. Consisting of three separate pods—J, K, and L—the southern resident orcas live in Puget Sound but their population is dwindling. Several calves from these pods have died in recent years, most famously a calf that lived less than an hour in the summer of 2018. Her mother, Tahlequah, then carried the dead calf for more than two weeks and one thousand miles throughout the Salish Sea. These large seaweeds form dense canopies in intertidal and subtidal areas and can extend a hundred feet deep. They take up nutrients coming down the rivers, buffer ocean acidification, and, with the help of sunlight, grow into massive structures that feed a multitude of species, from bacteria to sea urchins. Following the dam’s removal in 2012 and the removal of the Glines Canyon Dam eight miles upstream two years later, the Elwha River is once again able to flow freely from its headwaters in the Olympic Mountains to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. All of this garbage was collected in a single day from the beach at the mouth of the Elwha River on the Olympic Peninsula. Plastic pollution has increased tenfold since 1980. Petroleum-based plastics persist in marine environments both underwater and on the water’s surface, wash up on shorelines, and are sometimes consumed by marine creatures and birds. Some plastics in the ocean degrade into smaller pieces, contributing to enormous garbage patches across the planet. Транзитні косатки або «бродяги» полюють на морських ссавців, як-от на тюленів і морських левів. Резидентний різновид або «домосіди» майже повністю харчуються лососем, здебільшого чавичею, найбільшим та найжирнішим його видом у регіоні. Південні резидентні косатки живуть у трьох окремих сімейних групах (J, K і L), але їхня популяція зменшується. Кілька малят із цих груп загинуло за останні роки. Đây là thành viên lớn nhất trong gia đình cá heo, cá voi sát thủ hay còn gọi là cá heo đen sống thành các quần thể tách biệt và có thói quen ăn uống khác biệt. Cá voi sát thủ sống tạm bợ có thể săn các loài động vật có vú ở biển như hải cẩu và sư tử biển. Còn cá voi sát thủ sống cố định chỉ hoàn toàn săn cá hồi – đa số là cá hồi chinook, là loại cá hồi lớn nhất, béo nhất trong vùng. Cá voi sát thủ miền nam sống ở Puget Sound có 3 nhóm chính là J, K và L. Tuy nhiên, số lượng đàn đang sụt giảm dần. Trong những năm gần đây, một số con non trong những nhóm này đã chết, và nổi tiếng nhất là sự kiện một con cá voi sát thủ non chỉ sống được chưa đầy một giờ đồng hồ vào mùa hè năm 2018. Sau đó, mẹ của chú cá voi này tên là Tahlequah đã mang theo xác chú hơn một tuần liền và bơi qua một ngàn dặm khắp Salish Sea. Những giống rong biển lớn này mọc thành một khu rừng dưới nước rậm rạp khắp vùng bãi triều và vùng dưới triều. Chúng thậm chí có thể bén rễ xuống sâu đến hàng trăm feet. Tảo bẹ lấy dưỡng chất từ các con sông, trung hoà độ acid trong nước biển và lấy ánh nắng mặt trời để phát triển thành những nơi trú ẩn khổng lồ nuôi sống vô số loài, từ vi sinh vật cho đến nhím biển. Chuyến hồi hương về nơi sinh sản của loài cá hồi là cảnh tượng đáng để chúng ta chiêm ngưỡng. Tại vô số các vùng xung quanh Sound, du khách có thể đi bộ đến mép nước và ngắm nhìn những chú cá dũng mãnh này vượt đường trở về nguồn, đến những luống sỏi. Tại đây, những con cá hồi cái đã đẻ sẵn trứng chưa thụ tinh để chờ cá hồi đực đến thụ tinh cho số trứng này. Sau khi con đập bị phá dỡ năm 2012, và tiếp theo là con đập Glines Canyon cách đó 8 dặm về phía thượng nguồn cũng được dỡ bở 2 năm sau đó, sông Elhwa một lần nữa lại có thể tự do chảy thông suốt từ đầu nguồn ở dãy núi Olympic đến eo biển Juan de Fuca. Đây tất cả số rác thải thu gom được chỉ trong một ngày ở bãi biển thuộc cửa sông Elwha thuộc bán đảo Olympic. Kể từ năm 1980 tình trạng ô nhiễm rác thải nhựa đã tăng gấp 10 lần. Loại nhựa được sản xuất từ dầu mỏ này hay trôi dạt trên biển, cả ở dưới nước và ở trên mặt biển, rồi bị dạt vào bờ. Đôi khi, những sinh vật biển và chim còn nuốt nhầm phải những thứ rác thải nhựa này. Những mảnh rác thải nhựa lớn bị vỡ thành những mảnh nhỏ hơn góp phần tạo thành những bè rác thải khổng lồ trên khắp hành tinh. Những con chim Sandpipers Phương Tây đang trên hành trình rời khu trú đông ở bờ biển Bắc và Nam Mỹ để về Bắc Cực làm tổ và ấm trứng.
